I love being able to customize the decodables. The students were amazed at their selections being quickly inserted into a decodable they could read within seconds. The decodables were really enjoyable for the children to read!

It was a hit! The kids loved being able to use their creativity while strengthening their reading skills with decodables. LitLab offered interactive features which made the experience truly engaging.

They were excited to read their stories, find their friends' stories afterwards, and then even read random stories with interesting titles. There isn't this excitement about Epic. They're not like, “Look at this cool book that I read,” but today they were like, “Oh my gosh, read this one!”

LitLab is a really engaging tool for students to create their own decodable books for fluency and skills practice!

Case study: top-quartile fluency gains

Nashville Classical Charter School launched a focused pilot in two classrooms (1st and 2nd grade).

LitLab was used during the school's Tier 2 intervention block. While teachers worked with small groups, the rest of the class used LitLab independently. Teachers assigned decodable patterns weekly, based on data from AIMSWeb and CKLA.

Emma Colonna, Director of K-8 Humanities, NCCS

“Both classes had growth/performance rates higher than the other 1st and 2nd grade classes.

Thank you all at LitLab for helping us create engaged, fluent readers - a skill no one can take away from them. I can't tell you how much it means to me to know our kids are choosing to read (and doing it well) every day.”

—Emma Colonna, Director of K-8 Humanities, Nashville Classical Charter School

Both classrooms that piloted LitLab outperformed their peers on end-of-year benchmarks. These two classrooms were in the top quartile for growth nationwide. Every student in both groups made gains in oral reading fluency.

Student engagement also saw a marked shift. Teachers reported sustained focus as well: 15 to 20 minutes of independent use, and growing excitement around reading.

NCCS data

Case Study: 94% of teachers see measurable reading gains with LitLab

Ringwood Primary School (Johnsburg CUSD 12, IL) serves ~300 students across K–2 and uses UFLI Foundations as their core phonics program. Teachers were seeing students perform well during explicit phonics lessons but struggle to transfer those skills into fluent reading of connected text.

Prior to LitLab, Ringwood students struggled to bridge the gap from decoding to fluency. According to Dawn Barrett, the site lead, “[students] were not applying the skills that they were using through the phonics instruction in their reading. They were still chopping words and stretching them out, but wouldn't put them together in a fluent word.”

How We Use AI — and How We Don't

Every AI decision we make is evaluated through one lens: does this serve the student's reading development?

Students never interact with a general-purpose AI.

LitLab is not a chatbot. Students read stories and record themselves reading. AI works behind the scenes to generate curriculum-aligned decodables and analyze oral reading accuracy. There is no open-ended text input or conversational AI for students.

Student data is never used to train AI models.

Student recordings are processed for reading analysis only. They are not used — by LitLab or by any of our AI vendors — to train machine learning models. Our vendor agreements explicitly prohibit this.

All AI-generated content is constrained by curriculum.

Every generated story is bound by a specific phonics skill scope, controlled vocabulary lists, and age-appropriate content parameters. Our library of ~1,500 pre-made decodables goes through rigorous human review.

Enterprise-grade vendor data policies.

We work with OpenAI and Google Cloud for specific, scoped tasks. Student data transmitted for processing is not stored by vendors, not used for training, and not shared.

FERPA, COPPA, and SOPPA compliant.

LitLab is designed for the classroom from the ground up. We have signed the National Data Privacy Agreement through the Student Data Privacy Consortium, and we regularly sign custom DPAs when working at the district level. We have been vetted by Common Sense Privacy.

Teachers stay in control.

Teachers decide what content students see, which assignments to give, and whether to enable story creation. All student-generated content is visible to teachers. Reading data belongs to the school and can be deleted at any time.
