- Use connecting words and subordinating conjunctions (while, when, as, until, etc.)
- Implement "show, not tell" descriptive techniques, incorporating sensory details (how things feel, sound, look, etc.)
- Use dialogue
- There should be a clear problem and solution

Jaxon the bug was on a mission. He had one reason to go out today. "I need one red ribbon for my mother," Jaxon said. He wondered where he could find one. He walked down a long path. Jaxon saw a big red button on the ground. "This is not a ribbon," he said with a frown. Jaxon did not give up. He saw a crimson leaf fall from a tree. He picked it up. This will be the perfect gift for my mother! Jaxon was so happy he had a gift.

He sat up with a jolt. "Today is my mother's birthday!" he said.

Byron had a box with a red ribbon, but he had to find a gift to put inside.

"I must find a gift for my mother!" said Byron.

"Where can I find a gift for her?" he wondered.

Byron galloped down the path to start looking.

He spotted a black button. "This is not a good gift," he said. 

He saw a crimson leaf fall from a tree and picked it up.

"This leaf is nice, but it is not the right gift for my mother," he complained.

Byron was ready to give up. He sat at the top of the big hill to think.

While he sat, Byron looked down at the bottom of the hill. 

Byron ran to a big patch of flower blossoms at the bottom of the hill.

""I can collect blossoms for my mother!" Byron said. "That is the perfect gift for her!""
