- The story should have an interesting plot with a sequence of clearly connected events (do not end the story with "the end")

- Vary sentence patterns (simple, compound, and complex)
- Use connecting words and subordinating conjunctions (while, when, as, until, etc.)
- Implement "show, not tell" descriptive techniques, incorporating sensory details (how things feel, sound, look, etc.)
- Use dialogue
- There should be a clear problem and solution

Reading Horizons (2nd)

Robyn the snow leopard rested in her snow cave. Her friend Lynn was sad. "The Olympics will be on, but the gym is shut," said Lynn. "I will miss gymnastics." Robyn had an idea. She went to the back of the snow cave. Robyn planted some logs in the soft snow. "We can have our own Olympics!" said Robyn. Lynn hopped on the logs. She did kicks and flips. It was the best gym.

"I want to be in the Olympics, but I do not have a gym to do gymnastics," said Lynn.
