Lane's Big Save

Lane was on a trip with Mom and Dad.

She got on her bike and rode to the cove with Mom.

They sat in the sand to look at the waves.

"Look here!" Lane said to mom.

"That is a grebe," said mom.

Lane rose to look.

Lane froze. "Mom, this grebe can't swim! It has a rope on its leg!" she said.

"What a shame!" said Mom.

"It will not be safe if it can't swim. We have to help it!" said Lane.

"We can't get close to help it, Lane," said mom. "It will not trust us."

Lane sat to think, then she came up with a plan!

She ran to her bike and got her lunch box.

Lane left her lunch on the sand and sat close by.

Step by step the grebe came and had a bite.

While it ate, Lane came close to it and got the rope off its leg.

The grebe had one last bite, then off it went to wade in the waves!

"You did it, Lane!" said mom. Lane gave mom a big smile. She was so glad she could save the grebe.
