- Only use 1 syllable words in the story except for skill words, custom words, character, setting, and character name.
- Use dialogue when possible
- Vary sentence patterns (simple, compound, and complex)
- Use connecting words and subordinating conjunctions (while, when, as, until, etc.)
- Use the following story structure: 1-2. Introduce character and set the scene, 3-5. Introduce the problem. 6-7. Provide a bit of detail. 8-10. Solve the problem. 11-12. Wrap things up.

Lev spies a red pie up in the skies. He tries and tries to get the pie, but it is too high.  He cries.  When the pie falls from the skies, it lands with a thud. Lev runs to the pie.  He sees a small dent in the pie. “Oh no!” Lev cries.  He tries to fix the dent. Lev fills the dent with red jam.  He smiles.  The pie smells so good!  Lev munched and munched.  He dries his chin.


He gets some milk and an egg. Then, he mixes and rolls the dough.

Chase fills the pie with jam. He lifts it up to place it in the stove.

Chase lies next to the pie to check on it. 

The pie has a big dent! As Chase tries to fill in the dent, some flies land on top.

He picks up the pie and tosses it in the trash. Then, he cleans and dries his hands.

Chase spies the jam next to the fridge and smiles.

He grabs a slice of toast and puts some jam on it.

"I do not have pie, but at least I have toast!" Chase says with a big grin.
