- Only use 1 syllable words in the story except for skill words, custom words, character, setting, and character name.
- Use dialogue when possible
- Vary sentence patterns (simple, compound, and complex)
- Use connecting words and subordinating conjunctions (while, when, as, until, etc.)
- Use the following story structure: 1-2. Introduce character and set the scene, 3-5. Introduce the problem. 6-7. Provide a bit of detail. 8-10. Solve the problem. 11-12. Wrap things up.

Coach Joe had a goal.  He had a boat. He had a coat.  The oak by the coast had a croaking toad.  "Whoa!" said Coach Joe.  He coaxed the toad to go in the boat.  When the boat began to float, the toad croaked. Coach Joe’s boat soaked in the foam by the moat.  He can coast to the road.  The toad can roam.


Joe had a goal to sail around the coast. 

He strolled to the dock and stuck his toe in the waves.  Joe groaned. It was freezing!

Then, he got up, put on a life vest and jumped in his boat.

"Let's see how fast this thing goes!" he called out as the wind whisked the boat out to sea. 

Joe let the boat float and drift in the sea. Then, he steered with the wheel.

The waves splashed foam on the sides of the boat as a swift wind coaxed it along.

From the boat, Joe glanced back at the coast. He was glad to see a doe eating grass by a big oak tree.

At last,  Joe saw the dock and steered the boat back. He had made it all the way around the coast!
