- Use dialogue when possible
- Vary sentence patterns (simple, compound, and complex)
- Use connecting words and subordinating conjunctions (while, when, as, until, etc.)
- Use the following story structure: 1-2. Introduce character and set the scene, 3-5. Introduce the problem. 6-7. Provide a bit of detail. 8-10. Solve the problem. 11-12. Wrap things up.

Jean the seal sits on the beach.  The hot sun beats on her.  She hears the waves and dreams of a big, cool treat.  "I wish I had some ice cream!" Jean squeals.  She leaps up and speaks to her friend, Neal. "Do you want to find some treats?" Neal beams. "Yes!" he screams.  They sneak up to the snack shack and see peaches and cream.  Neal grabs a peach, but Jean grabs the cream.  Jean and Neal sit and eat their treats on the beach.  Jean smiled.  This is the best treat!


Jean scans the sea. The gleaming waves look like a dream. 

"I wish I had some ice cream!" Jean squeals.
