- Use connecting words and subordinating conjunctions (while, when, as, until, etc.)
- Use the following story structure: 1-2. Introduce character and set the scene, 3-5. Introduce the problem. 6-7. Provide a bit of detail. 8-10. Solve the problem. 11-12. Wrap things up.

Clay the pig sat by the bay.  He had a tray and paints. Clay aimed to paint the sails on the boats.  The sails swayed and he wailed, "How can I paint them if they sway?"  He sprayed the sails with glue.  "Yay!" Clay said.  The sails stayed still.  When he was done, his friend Kate praised his painting.  Kate said, "You found a way to paint the sails! I would pay to see this!" Clay smiled. He gained a new skill that day.


One day, Clay the pig sat on a bench by the bay. Clay felt a strong wind.

He had a tray of paints and a brush. Clay aimed to paint the sail on his ship.

Clay got his brush and stuck it in some red paint. When he went to brush the paint on the sail, the sail swayed away from him.

"How can I paint the sail if it sways?" Clay wailed with red paint stained on his hands.

Clay fished the wet sail out of the bay and set it back on the dock to dry in the rays of the sun.

Then, he stuck his brush back in the paint tray and went to paint the sail again. 

Just like last time, the sail swayed away from Clay. "What a pain!" yelled Clay.

Fay heard Clay yelling and came to the dock to check on him. "Can I help you?" asked Fay.

"This sail will not stay!" said Clay. Fay gave a nod. She had a plan!

Fay called to her pals. One by one they came to the dock and sat at the edge of the sail.

The gulls held the sail in place.  Clay got his brush to paint again. This time the sail did not sway!
