Christie's Big Dream

The kids in the classroom did not like the books. “I can’t read this,” Sam said. “These books are for a baby,” said Dee with a sigh.

“I want a book on green peacocks,” said Dee. “I want a book with a rainbow,” said her friend. “I want a book with a goat and a sailboat!” said another.

But the books on the shelf stayed closed. The kids did not want to read at all.

Their teacher, Christie, had a goal. She wanted every child to love books.

That night, Christie stayed up late. She had an idea. “I’ll find better books,” she whispered. Books about rainbows, goats, moonlit nights — whatever the kids wanted!

She looked online. She typed: book with a green peacock. She typed: book with a blue sailboat. She typed: book with a rainbow and a feast.

She clicked and scrolled. And then, she saw them! Books with crows and goats. Books with bees and boats. Books full of fun and wonder.

The next day, she printed some of the books and showed the kids. “Look!” she said, smiling. The kids saw books they liked. “This is so cool!” said Dee.

Some kids read books with big letters. Some read books with long words. They were all reading!

But still, something wasn’t quite right. Some books were too hard. Some were too easy. “We need better books,” Christie thought.

So she told her friends. “I think we can make this better,” she said. She spoke to two friends who liked helping kids and making things.

The three friends met and sat at their computers. They dreamed up a way to help every teacher make books kids want to read. Books made for each reader — not too easy, not too hard, but just right.

Now, from Christie's big idea, kids like Dee and their teachers can make just-right books about any topic. Books with animals, robots, friends, and fun! And that is how LitLab was born.
