Reading Horizons (1st)

- Only use 1 syllable words in the story except for skill words, custom words, character, setting, and character name.
- Use dialogue when possible
- Vary sentence patterns (simple, compound, and complex)
- Use connecting words and subordinating conjunctions (while, when, as, until, etc.)
- Use the following story structure: 1-2. Introduce character and set the scene, 3-5. Introduce the problem. 6-7. Provide a bit of detail. 8-10. Solve the problem. 11-12. Wrap things up.

Rue the bat had the blues.  He lost his blue suit! “How will I go to the fruit bat ball?” he wails.  He sees a clue on his bed. A bit of blue fuzz.  Rue uses his nose. He sniffs and finds more clues. The fuzz trail leads to the trash. Rue digs and finds his suit!  It has a rip, but he fixes it with glue.  At the ball, all the bats see Rue’s suit. “True blue!” one bat said. Rue smiles. He dips his fruit in juice.


Rue the bat felt quite blue. He lost his red suit!

“How will I go to the fruit bat ball?” he wails.

Rue sees a clue on his bed. It was a bit of red fuzz!

Rue spots his pal, Sue. "Is it true you lost your red suit?" Sue asks.

""Yes!" Rue nods. "And I will miss the ball if I do not get it back.""

Sue helps Rue look for more clues. They spot more red fuzz on the path. 

The suit has a rip, but he fixes it with glue. "I can go to the ball!" yells Rue. 

Rue and Sue go to the ball. Rue looks grand in his red suit.

The bats smile and split a glass of juice. Rue is so glad he made it to the ball!
