- Vary sentence patterns (simple, compound, and complex)
- Use connecting words and subordinating conjunctions (while, when, as, until, etc.)
- Implement "show, not tell" descriptive techniques, incorporating sensory details (how things feel, sound, look, etc.)
- Use dialogue
- There should be a clear problem and solution

Lesson 100 (-er, -est)

Bloom the caterpillar sat on a big, leafy plant.  He looked down. The ground looked so far down! Bloom was the smallest caterpillar ever. He wanted to be bigger. He wanted to be the biggest.  "I want to be taller," Bloom said. He saw a ladybug. The ladybug was smaller.  "I am bigger than you," Bloom said. The ladybug looked. "I am shorter than you," said the ladybug. "But I can fly higher." The ladybug flew up, up, up to the highest leaf. Bloom looked up.  He climbed up the plant.  He climbed higher and higher. He climbed faster and faster.  He got to the highest leaf.  "I am the highest," Bloom said.  The ladybug looked. "We are both on the highest leaf," she said.  Bloom smiled.  He was high and he had a new friend.


Zitto Zampa is a pirate. He is the boldest pirate. His ship might be the smallest, but his pot is the deepest.

Zitto wants his pasta, but the sea is the coldest! He does not want cold pasta. He wants the thickest, longest, softest pasta with the warmest sauce.

He sails to a cave. The cave is the darkest. The soup is the coldest. Zitto shivers. “It must get warmer,” he says.


Zitto Zampa lights a flame and waits. The pasta gets warmer. The pot is now the warmest!

Zitto jumps in. Splash! The pasta is warm. The smell is the strongest. The bite is the cheesiest.


He slurps the sauce. His slurps get louder and louder until he is the loudest!


Then Zitto Zampa naps. His belly is at its fullest. Zitto smiles. He is the proudest pirate in the most yummy pot.
